The music streaming service Lala is shutting down as of May 31, 2010. They are no longer accepting new users, and a notice on the Lala website explains how the shutdown will affect current users.
Lala says, "In appreciation of your support, you will receive a credit in the amount of your Lala web song purchases for use on Apple's iTunes Store." (Lala was purchased by Apple earlier this year.)
Pitchfork is exploring new media possibilities. Stay tuned.
Putting a small dinosaur puppet named Frank in your video-- as the Black Keys did with their recent "Tighten Up" clip-- is one thing. But put that same small tyrannosaurs poolside among a bevy of bikini babes and you've got "Next Girl"-- a potential viral hit that actually deserves to be a viral hit. It can happen, people.
The self-aware scrolling text at the bottom of the clip shows that the blues duo are in on the joke, and the video falls in line with the deadpan cover of the Black Keys' new album, Brothers, out May 18 on Nonesuch. Watch it below or here:
-- Boston indie-pop bad Pants Yell! are breaking up. The band's upcoming May shows will be their last. Check out their blog for more info.
-- Field Lines is a new, interactive computer program designed to accompany Flying Lotus's forthcoming LP, Cosmogramma. It's trippy and features some atmospheric FlyLo music and is probably best appreciated under some sort of influence.
-- Former Lungfish leader Daniel "A.I.U." Higgs returns with a new, Dave Sitek-assisted album of "gospel songs and poems" called Say God on May 18 via Thrill Jockey.
-- Drag City reissues Kansas City singer-songwriter Jeff Eubank's cult artifact A Street Called Straight on May 18.
"off-shore drilling seems like the 'shooting-up between ur toes' phase of oil addiction. and the Gulf spill might be the 'stealing ur mama's sofa' phase. or selling - either way."

And now, the Pitchfork stage lineup at this year's San Miguel Primavera Sound Festival:
"Tonight", the new single from the blaring London duo the Big Pink, is out now in the UK via 4AD; it's got a cover of Beyoncé's "Sweet Dreams" as the B-side. The band is celebrating the single's existence by releasing a free remix EP into the world.
Right now, you can click on over to the Big Pink's site to cop the Tonight RemixEP, which includes four different reworkings of the title track. We already Forkcasted one of those remixes, from the spooky, unpronounceable producer oOoOO. The EP also features remixes from Coyote Clean Up, Ghost Hunter, and Von Haze. Click here to get it.
"She was trying to show violence to end violence. It's for all the people that are doing the genocides in real life. Italians, Africans-- wherever it's from, it's still a genocide."
-- Ian Hamrick, the 12-year-old redhead who gets shot in the head in M.I.A.'s wildly NSFW "Born Free" video, gives us his interpretation of the clip, which he has yet to see in full. The quote comes courtesy of a creepy TMZ paparazzo, who is really working overtime on this one. (Via TMZ.)
The new clip for Liars' "The Overachievers" stars an American psycho and a dripping bag of blood. The band's own Aaron Hemphill directed the low-budget video, which is about as unsettling as you'd expect. Did we mention the bag of blood is dripping onto a bowl of eggs? Yeah. Watch it here.
Liars are also currently taking part in Beck's Record Club cover of INXS's 1987 bestseller Kick. Watch lead singer Angus Andrew rap lines like "rape an ape" and "my boner aches" in the crew's take on "Mediate" below:
